Awareness Programme on Hygienic Sanitation Habits and Cleanliness with Safai Karmacharis
  • Supported By: CSR of BPCL
  • Beneficiares: 350 sanitation workers
  • Duration: 2020
  • Coverage: Ambedkar Colony, Alipore, Kolkata

Project Overview

Objective:

To enhance awareness on hygienic sanitation practices, preventive health behaviors, and menstrual hygiene management among Safai Karmacharis (Sanitation Workers) and their families, thereby promoting community well-being and dignity of labor.

Overview:

Sanitation workers play a critical role in maintaining urban hygiene, yet often remain excluded from the benefits of health education, WASH (Water, Sanitation and Hygiene) services, and public awareness programs. Recognizing this gap, SEED initiated a focused awareness programme in Ambedkar Colony—a settlement predominantly inhabited by Safai Karmacharis in Alipore, Kolkata.

Impact:

  • 350 families directly sensitized to hygienic sanitation practices, waste management, and preventive healthcare.
  • Indirect reach of over 9,500 individuals through household-level behavior change and knowledge-sharing.
  • Improved menstrual hygiene awareness among women and girls, encouraging healthy WASH behavior at home.
  • Strengthened dignity and health safety of frontline sanitation workers through inclusion in structured awareness and capacity-building.
