  • Duration: 2023- 2024

Project Overview

Objective:

To create sustainable income opportunities through climate-resilient fruit and vegetable cultivation on erosion-prone Ghoramara Island.

Overview:

Given Ghoramara Island’s vulnerability to erosion and sea-level rise, SEED launched a horticulture initiative aimed at strengthening food security and diversifying incomes. Fruit saplings and tailored horticulture kits were distributed, while women and youth received training in organic methods and post-harvest handling. The backyard gardens not only improved dietary diversity but also provided surplus produce for local markets, offering a new economic opportunity for islanders.

Impact:

  • Distributed fruit saplings and horticulture kits tailored to coastal soil types.
  • Enabled backyard and kitchen garden development in 7 villages.
  • Improved nutrition and food security for over 1,200 people.
  • Built skills in post-harvest handling and organic cultivation techniques.
