Coverage: Purulia & South 24 Parganas, West Bengal
Duration: 2015 - 2017
Beneficiaries: 169 children from fisherfolk and agricultural labourer families
Objective: To provide bridge education, monthly health checkups, and parental counselling for 169 children of fisherfolk and agricultural labourers, enabling their reintegration into formal schooling and promoting long-term literacy and well-being.
Project Overview
Under Rotary India Literacy Mission’s Asha Kiran initiative—aimed at bringing out-of-school children back into mainstream education—SEED implemented community-based learning centres targeting 169 vulnerable children in Sagardwip. These centres offered tailored remedial classes to build foundational literacy and numeracy, crucial to bridge learning gaps and aid school re-entry. Monthly health checkups ensured early detection and treatment of common ailments, helping maintain consistent attendance. In parallel, parental counselling workshops raised awareness about the value of education, child rights, and school attendance, reducing dropout pressures and fostering family support for continued learning.
Impact So Far
• 162 out of 169 children mainstreamed into government or government-aided schools—a 96% success rate in educational reintegration.
• Monthly checkups and hygiene awareness led to reduced absenteeism.
• Parental engagement rose significantly, improving caregiver involvement in children’s education and reducing early dropout.
